Exclusive: Liberal MP Alexandra Mendes calls for Trudeau's resignation
Ottawa - Alexandra Mendes, a Liberal MP, has broken ranks and called for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign.
Mendes, who represents the riding of Brossard-Saint-Lambert, made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday morning. She said that she had lost confidence in Trudeau's ability to lead the country.
“I have come to the difficult decision that I can no longer support the Prime Minister,” Mendes said. “I have lost confidence in his ability to lead our country.”
Mendes’s announcement comes in the wake of a number of scandals that have rocked the Trudeau government, including the SNC-Lavalin affair and the WE Charity controversy.
Mendes said that the scandals had eroded her trust in Trudeau’s government.
“I believe that the Prime Minister has lost the moral authority to lead our country,” she said.
Mendes is the first Liberal MP to publicly call for Trudeau’s resignation.
Her announcement is a significant blow to Trudeau, who is already facing pressure from within his own party to step down.
It is unclear whether Mendes’s announcement will trigger a leadership race within the Liberal Party.
Trudeau has not yet commented on Mendes’s announcement.
